    ASTM A 335/A 335M Seamless Alloy Steel Pipes 02

Alloy steel pipes manufactured to ASTM A 335 shall be suitable for bending, flanging (vanstoning), and similar forming operations and for fusion welding. Several grades are covered by the standard. The selection of any grade will depend upon design, service conditions, mechanical properties and high temperature characteristics.

    1. How to inquiry a ASTM A 335 seamless pipe?

In your inquiry, appreciate if you please include the following details:
    1) Quantity (feet, meters, number of lengths or pieces),
    2) Grade of the ASTM A 335 material (P5, P9, P11, P22 or P91, etc)
    3) Manufacture (hot rolled or cold drawn)

    4) NPS and wall thickness (Schedule Number)
    5) Length (specific or random).
    6) End Finish(butt weld, plain or threaded)
    7) Painting and other requirements.

    2. Heat treatment for all ASTM A 335 Materials

There are several grades regulated by ASTM A 335: Grade P1, P2, P5, P5b, P5c, P9, P11, P12, P15, P21, P22, P23, P91, P92, P122 and P911(click to see the chemical and mechanical properties of all these grades). Seamless pipes conforming to this standard may be either hot finished or cold drawn with finishing heat treatment.

(2-1) All pipe of grades except P5c, P23, P91, P92, P122, and P911, shall be reheated and furnished in the full-annealed, isothermal annealed, or normalized and tempered condition. If furnished in the normalized and tempered condition, the minimum tempering temperature for Grades P5, P5b, P9, P21, and P22 shall be 1250°F [675°C], the minimum tempering temperature for Grades P1, P2, P11, P12, and P 15 shall be 1200°F [650°C].

(2-2) Pipe of Grades P1, P2, and P12, either hot finished or cold drawn, may be given a final heat treatment at 1200°F [650°C] to 1300°F [705°C] instead of heat treatments specified in (2-1).

(2-3) Grades P92 and P911 shall be normalized at 1900°F [1040°C] minimum and tempered at 1350°F [730°C] minimum as a final heat treatment.

(2-4) Grade P122 shall be normalized at 1900°F [1040°C] minimum, and tempered at 1350°F [730°C] minimum as a final heat treatment.

(2-5) Grade P23 shall be normalized at 1900°F [1040°C] minimum with air cooling or accelerated cooling and tempered at 1350°F [730°C] minimum as a final heat treatment.

(2-6) Grade P91 shall be normalized at 1900°F [1040°C] minimum, and tempered at 1350°F [730°C] minimum as a final heat treatment. Alternatively, liquid quenching and tempering is allowed for thicknesses above 3 in. when mutually agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. In this case the pipe shall be quenched from 1900°F [1040°C] minimum and tempered at 1350°F [730°C] minimum as final heat treatment.

    3. Inspection and test for ASTM A 335 seamless pipes

    These tests includes:
    1) Hydrostatic test.
    2) Nondestructive test: ultrasonic examination, eddy current examination.
    3) Visual examination: all surfaces should be clean and free of scale, dirt and grease.
    4) Dimensional inspection: especially the outside diameters.
    5) Flattening.
    6) Bend test and hardness test.
