ASTM B 166: Nickel Alloys in Rod, Bar and Wire Form

    1. Nickel alloys designation covered by ASTM B 166

    The ASTM B 166 covers nickel-chromium-iron alloys including UNS N06600 (Inconel 600), N06601 (Inconel 601), N06603 (Inconel 603), N06690 (Inconel 690), N06693 (Inconel 693), N06025, N06045, and N06696. It also includes nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy UNS N06617 (Inconel 617).

    2. Product form of ASTM B 166: bar, rod, wire

According to ASTM B 166, the nickel alloy products are categorized as bar, rod and wire. A bar is the material of rectangular(flats), hexagonal, or square solid section up to and including 10 inch (254mm) in width and 1/8 inch (3.2mm) and over in thickness in straight lengths. In addition, hot-rolled rectangular bar in widths 10 inch and under may be furnished as hot-rolled plate with sheared or cut edges in accordance with ASTM A 168, provided the mechanical property requirements of ASTM A 166 are met. A rod is the material of round solid section furnished in straight lengths. The wire is a cold-drawn solid product of unform round cross section along its whole length, usually supplied in coil form. The nickel alloy rod and bar can be either hot rolled or cold worked but the wire within this standard shall be cold drawn.

    3. Test and inspection of ASTM B 166 nickel alloy materials

All the bar, rod and wire of Ni-Cr-Fe alloys and Ni-Cr-Co-Mo alloys shall take relative standard inspection and test for each heat-number lot according to ASTM B 166. These tests including chemical analysis, tension test and hardness test. Dimensional examination and visual inspection of surface finish on each item in accordance with this standard shall be carried out.

    4. Delivery conditions and finish

The rods and bars of Ni-Cr-Fe alloys and Ni-Cr-Co-Mo alloys covered by ASTM B 166 have diverse delivery conditions and finish requirements:

    1) Hot worked - With a tightly adherent, dark oxide surface.

    2) Hot worked, rough-ground - Similar to hot worked except rough ground.

    3) Hot worked, rough-turned - Similar to hot worked except rough-turned with a broad-nosed tool similar to a bar peeling operation and thus may not be straight.

    4) Hot worked, forging-quality - Rough turned and spot-ground. The material has good hot malleability.

    5) Hot worked, annealed - Soft, with tightly adherent dark oxide.

    6) Hot woked, annealed, pickled - Same as 5) except descaled for removal of mill oxide. Soft and dull matte finish.

    7) Cold worked - Straight lengths with a smooth, bright finish.

    8) Cold worked, annealed, and pickled - Soft and dull matte finish.
